PlayStation has recently released an unexpected firmware update for the PS3, but it removes functionality from the PSP and PS Vita, the company's two handheld consoles. The update came on May 10 alongside a similarly surprising firmware update for the Vita, measures that have been taken for the sake of user account security. The PS3 update has made it more difficult for users to transfer their digital games from the home console to either portable devices, with the issue making certain models of the PSP almost completely obsolete.
This latest firmware update for the PS3 and Vita makes it so that users are required to use two factor authentication when signing into their PlayStation Network accounts. This is a continuation of Sony's plans to sunset the aging devices, which includes measures like disabled credit card and PayPal payments on both the PS3 and Vita, even though both of their PlayStation Stores remain functional due to user demand. The need for two factor authentication seems to have ruined an important feature for those still using the PSP and Vita - the ability to download PSP and Vita games on a PS3 before transferring them to the portable device.
This functionality, which was found to no longer exist by Twitter user SarahSSowertty, was especially nice for retro gaming fans, since it allowed a wide variety of original PlayStation games to be played on a PS Vita, the only caveat being many of the classic titles required transfer from a PS3, and couldn't be downloaded to the Vita directly. The older PSP has arguably been more affected, though, since the device's built-in PlayStation Store is no longer usable. Players are able to purchase PSP games via PS3 and Vita, but with no way to transfer them, the handheld console's digital market is essentially defunct.
While all PlayStation Portable and Vita systems have been affected by the recent firmware updates, the PSP Go in particular has now become almost non-functional. Releasing four years after the original PSP, the Go had a sliding screen that concealed the control panel and no slot for the UMDs that physical PSP games were distributed on. The PSP Go was a failure, being almost completely discontinued less than two years after it launched, but anyone still using one now has no option but piracy to get new games onto the system.
The user base for the PSP and Vita is likely small, but this is yet another move by a major console producer that hurts game preservation. Nintendo has recently made similar decisions detrimental to the retro gaming scene through the 3DS and Wii U store closures. Similar issues cropped up when two factor authentication was first introduced on the PS3 and Vita, but this latest firmware update seems to have broken the workarounds many were still using. The market has completely moved on from the PlayStation Portable and Vita, but anyone still using them might not want to update their PS3's firmware.
Do you want to download PSP games to your PlayStation Portable Your PSP can play both PSP and PS1 games. In order to download PSP games, you need to make sure your PSP has the latest firmware. You will also need to install custom firmware, which you can do by connecting your PSP or Memory Stick Duo to your computer. Downloading custom firmware and ISO files can be harmful to your PSP and downloading copyright games is illegal. Download games and custom firmware at your own risk.
Custom firmware allows the running of unsigned code such as homebrew applications, UMD .ISO files, emulators for other consoles and PS1 games when the disc images are converted into an EBOOT file. This is in stark contrast to the official system software, where only code that has been signed by Sony can run.
All legally and illegally obtained content can be played on custom firmware, assuming that it is at the latest version (currently 6.61).During the early days of the PSP hacking scene, it was discovered that firmware 1.00 allowed unsigned code to run. While this firmware only existed on PSP-1000 models from Japan, many users imported these models to run and develop homebrew. An exploit was later discovered in firmware 1.50 that also allowed unsigned code to run. This opened up North American PSP-1000 systems for homebrew. Firmware 1.5 acted as the standard firmware for homebrew until the creation of eLoaders (which use various exploits to launch a homebrew \"menu\"), savegame exploits in games such as Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Lumines: Puzzle Fusion and eventually DarkAlex's custom firmware releases, which all allowed PSPs shipped after the 1.51 update's release to run homebrew.
While the PSP will receive a number of minor changes, including a sleep timer option while playing music, a full screen keyboard option for text entry, and a redesigned XMB background, players will also soon be able to log on to the PSN store via a Wi-Fi network to purchase and download games and other content directly from their PSPs.
The next firmware update for Sony's handheld console brings with it a host of changes designed to make shopping for downloadable content and keeping up with the latest in PSP-centric news easier for gamers.
The latest PSP firmware update, version 3.93, was released earlier today, and brings with it 20 additional players for the internet radio feature that Sony added to the portable with December's 3.80 update.
On the download section of this page: it says 6.60 PRO-C fix 3 (6.60 PRO-C2 has a bug that prevents PSN PSX games from being played at all!). Is this actually the case Should I install the fix Do I need to replace the old FastRecovery folder as well
Sony has said that PlayStation Portable owners who plan to use the handheld as a remote media player for PlayStation 3, or to use it to play games downloaded from the PS3's online network, will need to download the version 3.0 firmware due out later this month.
PS3 owners who want to access the PlayStation Network will also be expected to download the version 1.10 firmware for the console as soon as they get it home and plug it in for the first time, with the patch available by visiting the \"System Update\" area of the system menu in the cross media bar.
To summarize this post, the chinese MP5 PSP clone works best as a NES / GBA emulator. Non-fast moving games for Mega Drive / Genesis / Gameboy also works good. However, SNES emulation on this particular device is way to buggy. The device may also be ok to use as an MP3-player. However, it is unlikely that you will find it useful for taking photos or playing videos.
Hello Beatriz. I have been looking for firmware for these units as well, but without any luck. My unit got stuck in a boot-loop a year ago. It got unstuck after I turned it on the other week, so maybe a complete battery discharge helped. Also, some game files may cause the units to get stuck, so if you can access it via usb, remove or rename some of your games, or remove the memory card.
Now that the PS4 firmware update 3.00 has been rolled out, people are finding a ton of little tweaks and improvements. We can now take screenshots using PNG file extensions as well as event hubs. One thing that a sharp eyed Redditor noticed was that there is one thing that has apparently been taken away, despite the fact that it was well liked by users. The USB music player app is no where to be found, which means users are stuck with the less than impressive console media player.

1. Unfortunately, when you go to play a flash game online, there is no link that says\" DOWNLOAD SWF FILE HERE\". That would make things a whole lot easier, because now we have to attain the SWF file the old fashioned way. In order to download a SWF file that does not have a direct download link, you are going to have to download Mozilla Firefox, a great web browser that is safer, faster, and more customizable than all other web browsers. All other web browsers, such as Internet Explorer and Netscape, do not have the option that Firefox has to save a complete web page.
