So the good thing about the Oyster card is that it automatically works out the lowest fares for you, which will be the lower of a single fare, a daily cap or a weekly cap. This is based on where you travel, what time you travel and which zones you pass through. So we would just suggest getting an Oyster card and topping it up.
In terms of buying a train pass like the Eurail, I think it will depend on how many train trips and where you plan to go exactly to figure out if a Eurail pass would be a good value for you or not. They have become more complicated over time as seat reservations are often required for many of the high-speed trains and night trains and there can be additional seat reservations costs, including on the Eurostar (Paris-London). So I would plan out your itinerary and then decide where you plan to take the train and then calculate the cost of the individual tickets versus the Global Eurail Pass (which is the only one you could use for all 3 countries). Or if you are doing a lot of train trips within Germany, the Germany Eurail Pass could be an option (your 11 year old would travel for free there with a paying adult).
DO i buy a one day london pass along wiht oyster card, and on other days just top up my Oyster card, since i will be able to do hopin hop off and the cruise in one day , and other days roam at my own leisure
Also, any recommendations on where to stay if we want to use the most out of our London pass (also many thanks for your itinerary recommendations using a London Pass!) Appreciate any advice you have, thanks!
Hi Nat, Glad that our posts about the Oyster Card and London Pass have been helpful. Now, for your children, since they are 4 years old, they will travel for free on public transit within London with you so they do not need a pass as long as they are traveling with an adult with an= valid Oyster Card. For adults, regarding public transit, you can purchase an Oyster Card in advance online or get one once you get to London. You also have the option to purchase it as part of the London Pass package. All these options are described in the article above with links to where it can be purchased.
The pass includes fast-track access to several attractions (e.g., Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, London Zoo) where you get to skip the ticket lines although it does not allow you to skip security lines (e.g., Tower of London).
If that was the London Pass (you purchased the Oyster Card with the London Pass), you can contact them at 020 7293 0972 (UK contact number) or +44 20 7293 0972 (overseas number). The London Pass offers a 30 day money back guarantee but it requires sending them back the unused passes. If you would rather email them at info@londonpass.com or by using the contact form on their website.
Hi Darlene, Yes, in general the pass can help you save time anywhere there is a ticket line. So you can skip the ticket lines at most attractions. However, there are also sometimes lines to just get in and you get to skip those or be in a separate faster line just for pass/ticket holders at the busier attractions. It does not allow you to skip security lines. Hopefully that helps! Best, Jessica
Hi Kyung, You just need to order them here online and then they will either be delivered to your home or you can pick them up once you arrive in London at the pass office. They become activated on your first use (you do not need to go anywhere specific for them to be activated). So the first time you visit an attraction, the London Pass 3-day time starts. Remember for the London Pass it is good for 3 consecutive days (not 72 hours) so start using it in the morning if you can of your first day. For the Oyster TravelCard, you can use it at any time and it will have a set amount of credit on it and you can use that credit anytime (you can also add credit to the card). Using the Oyster Card does not activate your London Pass or vice versa. So they do not have to be used together, although of course most people use them at the same time. If you have remaining credit on your Oyster card, you can keep using it or use it on a future visit to London. Hope this helps and enjoy your visit to London! Happy travels, Jessica
Travelcards are a flat rate travel pass where you have unlimited rides in the selected zones for the time period purchased. You can use your travelcard across the London Network (with a few exceptions), so the travelcard covers your complete travel for a set time period and for a set fee paid up front.
The kind of pass you are talking about is sold only at National Rail stations (many of which are also Tube stations). You can't get it at Heathrow. Simply buy a single fare ticket for each of you at Heathrow to get you to your hotel. Then go to the nearest National Rail station to buy the travel card. It is a paper card and has the National Rail logo on it. You will need a passport sized (not passport quality) photo of each of you for the 7 day card. They will make the id card for you for free. You can read details of the card, 2-for-1 deals offered and even print out the vouchers you want at the Transport for London Days Out website. [ -transport-museum][1] You have to show the voucher (they may or may not have booklet of these at the station where you buy the card) and your card and id to take advantage of the deals. But they are worth the little bit of extra trouble.
The \"London Pass\" is not viewed by many here as a good deal. Many of the sites it lists are already free! And it has a daily limit that is not mentioned except in the very small print. Plus, you can seldom see enough sites without really rushing- and why bother if you do that. And if you plan your timing right, you won't need the 'skip the line' option if offers in some places. The TfL National Rail paper travel card with the 2-4-1 deals is usually a much better value. Like you, we prefer to get cards for zones 1-6 (or 7) and have the freedom to travel where and when we desire. Bath train tickets are expensive on the day of. But you can solve that problem 2 ways. Either get a BritRail pass (we often used that because we liked the flexibility it gave us- but it was many years ago and it is not the value it used to be, plus if Bath is the only major train journey you are planning, it wouldn't be helpful), or go ahead and determine a set date and time to travel and buy your ticket about 11 or 12 weeks ahead of your travel. That is when the discount fares are released. Don't wait to long though, they do sell out quickly. But you do need to know that you are committed to a specific train - no changing the time of travel- no refunds or exchanges. If you miss your train or change your minds, you loose your money and have to purchase new, more expensive tickets.
