The other film of note is Debut, which was released in 1972. It was the first Indian film to win the international prize at the Venice Film Festival and a few other international prizes. It was also the first Indian film to run for a full 100 minutes! The movie also spawned a franchise and several sequels.
I was in a family drama by the name of Debut directed by the same N. Chandra and Ramanand Sagar. It was in the 70's and too late to run longer than 2 hours. The film was about three brothers, who are all about to enter college. Their father was an influential man in the area and so they are given scholarships by a millionaire. The film was based on a story by the same duo of Chandra and Sagar, who were actually the brothers of the film's director. But it didn't work out for them.
I recall a day we attended a class, and the film was being shown. The teacher told the class that it was the first Indian movie to run for 100 minutes. The film had a heroine in the form of Swathi. As a class, we were very excited, and the rest of the film didn't matter. We were all wondering if Swathi would have a solo song as well.
The next day when class started and all the teachers were standing there, we were told that the teacher had made a mistake. The film was running for a full 2 hours and not 100 minutes.
It was too bad though, because we were all so excited about the 100 minutes film. One of the students then told us that the film ran for a full 100 minutes and that the teacher was lying, but he didn't tell us whether the film was shot in 2 hours or whether it was re-edited.
It was a real disaster for that teacher, because the film was not only a hit, but it won the international prize at Venice Film Festival. The teacher had just been faking it to impress the class.
There is also a reference to Kissa Kursi Ka, a 1973 Hindi movie starring Shammi Kapoor. It was a crime-thriller directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and produced by Shobhan Babu. 827ec27edc
